U17 Girls Win Silver at Provincial Cup (Nov. 26/11)
TThe U17 team travelled to the Cobourg to kick off the 2011-2012 season. The girls got off to good start in the morning, finishing first in their pool and earning a bye in the first round of playoffs. The afternoon pitted the 1st place Thunder team against the weaker Akwesasne Soaring Eagles with Thunder easily moving on to the semi finals. After dropping the first set and trailing in the second set vs. Ottawa Fusion, the U17 girls came back to win the set and the match. The girls met a strong Maverick Twister team in the gold medal game and despite making another come back, the girls lost their first match of the day. Although the girls had to settle for the Silver, they achieved their goal of moving up to the Championship East division for the next tournament and are well poised for continued success this season!
2011/2012 Season Outlook
Our U16 team enjoyed another great year of volleyball during our 2010 - 2011 season. The team earned silver in a U-18 OVA tournament and gold at our U-16 Championship East OVA meet. The year ended with a great volleyball trip to the U.S., competing in the East Coast Championships/ Beast of the East competition, earning the bronze in the silver bracket.
With summer training and two great new athletes for our 2011 – 2012 team the new U-17 team will produce even more positive results.
In addition, our U-17 family welcomes two awesome Assistant Coaches. Farrah Ward brings with her past club and varsity-playing experience with the Ganaraska Wolves, Thunder and Queen’s University. Alana MacDonald comes from the East Coast system as a setter for Acadia University and followed by coaching Club in Nova Scotia. It’s great to have Coach Russ to lead the girls again this year.
Our first test will be at the Stingers pre-season tournament Nov. 13th at Maple H.S.
"Go Thunder!"
